Woree Primary School Celebrate NAIDOC

In the South of Cairns our Indigenous families took part in events held at their local schools. Sharing with the Cairns Community their talents and cultural history. The event was full of parents and their kids having a fun day enjoying entertainment like Indigenous dancing, arts & craft, face painting, talented musician’s, T-shirt Printing and a kup murri. I must say a “BIG THANK YOU” to Margret McCarthy for coordinating such a great day for the kids and parents to be proud of where they come from and share their culture with their Teachers and class mates. “Thank you” to the PaCE parents that were involved in NAIDOC Celebration. 

 COMPUTER LESSONS

Parents are learning so much from their computer lessons and are sharing their talents with their children and grandchildren. It has allowed them to assist with the young ones homework. It would be great to see more of you take this opportunity to explore the computer.

WORK 4 LIFE      

The Work 4 Life Program have committed to providing career opportunities to candidates who successfully complete the 6 week program. Working with Coles, Coles Express, Kmart and Accor. Three of the PaCE parents took up this opportunity and now have started to attend the 6 week Training. Ms. Prior say’s “That it’s the best decision she has ever made and how it is going to help with everyday expenses in raising her children.”  Anyone interested in applying Please contact Julie-ann Lamboure on 4047 8718 or 4047 8700 

 WOREE NAIDOC BEADING 

It’s been a big week for the Woree High School parents and students. They all enjoyed a great week celebrating NAIDOC with their school mates. Students enjoyed each other’s company creating their own traditional beading necklace and bracelets.  Sorry if parents were not informed of such event it was short notice. Hopefully next year you get to be involved with the big celebrations. If you are interested in taking part in NAIDOC next year, Please feel free to contact me and we can discuss how you can share great ideas.

JCU TOUR

Woree PaCE parents had the privilege of joining the Gordonvale PaCE parents on a tour of James Cook University. They all found it very inspiring and empowering to hear some great stories from the Indigenous beacons who host the tour. One day they too will be telling their stories to others.  

                           

HOME SWEET HOME

It’s been 7 long years for Ms Alpin. Now she has the enjoyment of her own home.

 She quotes “this is the happiest her kids have ever been for years.”

                            

DAWAL WURU FASHION SHOWCASE

Not every day you would see the average Indigenous models be part of a fashion show. Dawal Wuru had the chance to show case our local clothing shops and Indigenous designer’s outfits. It was the models first time on the catwalk. 

         

                                    

PLAY GROUP ART & CRAFT DAY

The parents and their little ones from the Whiterock playgroup enjoyed working together to build their own mobile cars. Ms Wallace accompanied the kids on a journey by singing the Wheels on the Bus song. 

                                 

COMPUTER LESSONS

Parents took their first computer lessons at FNQRSM conference room. They learnt the in’s & outs of the computer. They look forward to the next lesson. Anyone looking to learn how to use a computer? Feel free to come join in.

Catching up for a yarn

In the South of Cairns our Indigenous families took part in gathering together for encouragement. Parents all sharing experiences and getting to catch up for yarn. Melicha shared a little experience how she was introduced to the (PaCE) Parent & Community Engagement project and how it has changed her. The parents are very much interested in how we all can take part in the community and our kid’s education by sharing some great ideas together. Ms Brady suggested that she loves to see more of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island Parents be involved.

               

Having fun with their new Computers

Parents took the opportunity to making the first step to becoming proud owners of Laptop computer. FNQRSM would like to give a big Thank you to those 9 parents for allowing themselves to explore the computer world. You can now learn more about what your child is learning in school.

FNQRSM are having their first computer lessons on the 15^th August 2012 at 9:30am – 2:00pm in their conference room. Anyone in need for more details contact your Parent Support Officer.

FNQRSM Donation

First time young mother Ms Brady had an opportunity to be one of our teenage parents to benefit from PaCE program. She has been donated with a pram for her little one to travel to daycare. Her and her little one looks forward to more involvement in the program. Life is a lot easy now since she can place bubba in a pram when she is visiting FNQRSM office.

Indigenous Artist

You may have seen this guy around his name is Shane Wallace our local aboriginal artist. He has been following the PaCE program for some time now and loves how the program will empower our parents to compel them  to have more involvement with their child’s education even if it is through art.

CULTURE FESTIVAL

Playgroup

Lovely early morning after dropping the big siblings off to school, we all gather together enjoying each other’s company. Mum’s had fun with their little ones sitting and yarning with each other. Parents assist there little ones with painting, baking, riding bikes etc. Mrs Karen sat with the little kids around in a circle with their delicious treat they had made earlier. Reading a big book about spot the dog, they were amazed at the pictures they knew what objects was in the book like a truck, eggs, dog etc. Play group is expanding and a large number of parents are getting involved. Our parents enjoyed each other’s company as much as the kids do. Mrs Wallace has commented: “how the play group has helped her little one. My son was a very shy toddler before he went to playgroup; now he is out going and loves playing without me being around. He has become more confident now.” She just loves him for exploring.

Parent and Community Engagement ( PaCE ) can offer support and encouragement for families with a number of workshops been held to help achieve  a lifestyle change for a better future for their kids.

Parents learning how to use a computer

Indigenous parents are taking the opportunity to explore the wonders of the computer world. They are learning how to use a computer in order to provide support for their children when in need for assistance with their homework.
